I wanted to provide a brief recap of RMA highlights in 2022:

The 2021 RMA Conference was a great success. The entire conference team worked very hard to build on the learning from our first virtual event in 2020 and found even more robust thinking and speakers for the RMA membership to enjoy at the conference. Thanks to all who were involved in this year’s event.

The team is excited to take the learning and feedback from the 2021 conference and leverage it into our planning for an engaging, thoughtful, and social 2022 conference in Niagara Falls, Canada!

A few highlights from the 2022 Event:

  • The Whova app continued to be an incredible tool for our attendees and sponsors. We will continue to use Whova as a virtual support and as an onsite tool for the in-person 2022 conference
  • We received positive feedback on the quality and content of this year’s speakers. They all proved to be engaging and knowledgeable in their chosen topics
  • Our sponsors received more exposure to our attendees than in past years and the engagement and contact between our sponsors and attendees was unprecedented.
  • The Debt Buyer/Seller panel continues to be a conference favorite and we look forward to bringing it back in 2022.

Our learning over the past two years truly guarantees that we can bring new and innovative thinking like never before to the 2022 conference. If you have any questions or thoughts regarding the conference, please reach out to the RMA.

While 2021 was another unsettling year, the economy further hampered by the global pandemic, the Government Relations Committee (GRC) continued to advance RMA’s strategic agenda.

To gather intelligence relevant to managing through and beyond the pandemic, GRC chair Louis Fortin periodically engaged provincial regulatory officials –in each key jurisdiction– to gather regulatory dispositions, obtain feedback on the impacts of remote work on consumer complaints, and to pass along irregularities in industry activities.

Provincial regulatory officials reported that our industry’s development of effective operational controls resulted in both overall consumer satisfaction and high standards of privacy and data security. Despite multiple obstacles, RMA members maintained and exceeded service performance.

The table below summarizes GRC activities and achievement in 2022.

In November, the board and conference committee welcomed wide-spread participation in RMA’s second annual virtual conference. Increased participation by both provincial regulators and industry delegates helped to nurture the value proposition of membership and to strengthen RMA’s role as an industry voice and trusted advisor. RMA continues to forge ahead and wishes to thank all contributors to GRC’s success in 2021.

2023 will be another challenging year. The GRC will continue to press provincial regulators regarding the circumstances under which remote work may continue. RMA also will seek opportunities to communicate the industry’s desire to partner with governments to implement policies and regulations that foster job creation and economic growth –while protecting consumers.

The RMA board encourages members to communicate concerns and suggestions to GRC chair Jim Shaw, director11@rmacanada.org.

The work of the GAC could not have been accomplished without the guidance of RMA president, Jeffery Pilon, the excellent advice of government relations consultant, Patrick Dion, and committee members who have shared their individual experiences.

In 2022, GAC will continue to pursue many of the above-noted opportunities and to offer expertise and guidance to further strengthen the partnership with the public sector.
